Public Reading of Pride and Prejudice: An Ardent New Musical
The new musical is a celebration of love, sisterhood, and choosing oneself. The production features a book by Lauren Gunderson, one of the most produced playwrights in America, and music and lyrics by Kira Stone, a composer and lyricist whose work bridges pop music and theatrical storytelling. The musical is commissioned by Concord Theatricals.
Stone says, “For mine & Lauren’s “Pride & Prejudice,” we wanted to honor Austen’s wit and vivacity while letting the emotional world of the story expand into something more visceral and immediate, using music to give voice to everything the characters we love can’t say out loud. Austen gives us the architecture of the romance, and music lets us flood it with feeling that resonates with us and provides us with an escape, hope and yearning as intensely today as when it was written. We are so excited to begin the process of bringing this musical to life with the transformative support of Nashville Rep and Concord!”

The reading marks a milestone in the Ingram New Works Project’s developmental support of the piece, providing the creative team with audiences and real-time feedback as the work continues to take shape.
