Dolly Rebecca Parton is an American singer, songwriter, musician, actress, and philanthropist, widely recognized for her significant contributions to country music, becoming a legendary figure in the genre. With more than 100 million records sold worldwide and over 3,000 songs to her name, including hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly has not only topped numerous charts but also gained a special place in the hearts of many people.
While there are countless biographical accounts of the singer that masterfully illustrate her beginnings in the music industry and her rise to stardom, Dolly Parton herself wanted to tell her story through an audiovisual medium as unique and fitting as a musical. In it, she combines talents she has mastered—such as acting and singing—into an immersive experience that accompanies her life story in a fun and moving way.
In Dolly’s own words: “I’ve lived my whole life to see this show on stage. I’ve written many original songs for the show and included all your favorites in it as well. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp—it truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera. Pun and fun intended!”

The story centers on Dolly Parton, portrayed by Katie Rose Clarke, and presents the key moments in her life that shaped her path toward music. In the first act, the young Dolly, played by Quinn Titcomb, is portrayed as a brave and talented child who, supported by her beloved Uncle Bill, makes her debut on local television, showcasing her extraordinary talent. However, the production also portrays the more difficult aspects of her childhood, such as poverty, bullying, and life in a dysfunctional family that, due to its religious and conservative beliefs, opposed supporting her dreams.
During her teenage years and early adulthood, played by Carrie St. Louis, Dolly begins to challenge her family’s conservative values, especially those of her mother, with whom she had a complicated relationship. Although she tried to please her, Dolly refused to give up her dream of becoming a famous singer. Topics such as premarital relationships, provocative clothing, wearing makeup, and the ambition to pursue music professionally became a dispute both with her mother and within herself. Despite these conflicts, she decides to move to the city of Nashville in search of better opportunities to achieve her goal.
Once in Nashville, Dolly meets people who recognize her potential, particularly two key figures: Carl Dean (played by John Behlmann), her love interest, and Porter Wagoner (played by John Zdrojeski), a country music singer who invites her to join his television program The Porter Wagoner Show. Together, they form a successful musical duo, touring the country on multiple occasions and further boosting Dolly’s career.
The second act focuses on her adult life and how, despite achieving fame, she wanted to be an independent and respected artist. The storyline explores the challenge of balancing her career with her personal life, as well as the difficulties of earning respect as a woman in the music industry. Dolly emphasizes her commitment to the genre that raised her—country music—which she aimed to honor and represent throughout her career.
